Special Effect Lighting - What is it used for?

5th Dec 2015

Special effect lighting or illumination (often abbreviated as SFX, SPFX, or simply FX) is the deliberate use of light to achieve a practical or aesthetic effect. Lighting includes the use of artificial light sources like light fixtures, laser projectors and props. Special effect lighting can enhance performance, improve the appearance of an area, or have thrilling psychological effects on mood, perception and attention. Special effects are traditionally divided into the categories of optical effects and mechanical effects. With the emergence of digital filmmaking a distinction between special effects and visual effects has grown, with the latter referring to digital post-production while "special effects" referring to mechanical and optical effects.

Lighting fixtures come in a wide variety of styles for various functions. The most important functions are as a holder for the light source, to provide directed light and to avoid visual glare. Some are very plain and functional, while some are pieces of art in themselves. Nearly any material can be used, so long as it can tolerate the excess heat and is in keeping with safety codes.
