Passive or non-powered subwoofers are sound reinforcement speakers that have NO built-in amplifiers. These kinds of speakers need to be powered by an external amplifier to power them so they can emit sound. The advantage of passive loudspeakers is that they are much lighter than powered speakers and can be placed or flown in locations that require a smaller or lighter speaker to be installed or to be used for mobile venues or DJs.
